In the Middle Ages Lausanne was an important seat of the bishop and its Cathedral a centre for pilgrims until the Reformation. From mid 16th to early 19th century, Lausanne was administered by Berne, and the Governor lived in the castle.
Since 1803, Lausanne has been the capital of the Canton of Vaud.
From the18th century onwards Lausanne became very popular with rich foreigners who enjoyed its privileged position by lake Geneva overlooking the French Savoy mountains.
During the following centuries Lausanne became an important study centre, the headquarters of the International Olympic Organisation and numerous sporting federations.
A "green" city with numerous parks, Lausanne has an historical city centre full of charm, steep roads and several stairways.
